All the scholarships you can apply to as a doctoral student
The UK is an established centre of excellence for academic research. It is no coincidence that Britain alone enjoyed 12% of the European funds allocated to university research and training in the pre-Brexit era.
MPhil and the great leap towards the doctorate
This dedication is well reflected by the presence of proper degree courses – offered by nerve centers of scientific enquiry such as Oxford and Cambridge – which replace the Master’s degree with the name of Master of Philosophy (MPhil), preparing the Bachelor’s student to take the great leap towards the doctorate.
Financial aid: scholarships
The financial burden of PhD programmes often leads students to think that they have to give up this experience. However, there are many ways to obtain a scholarship that fully covers the tuition fees for PhDs in the UK.
Here are some examples:
- Often scholarships are conditioned by a geographical target, i.e. the country of origin. On the one hand, this can be a way of giving young talent in developing countries a chance to get involved, as in the Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme, the British Council’s PhD Programme and the Felix 2021 Scholarship for India. On the other, the UK also supports Europeans, as with the Kamran Djam Scholarship, Leeds Doctoral Scholarship or Aberystwyth University Scholarship.
- The scholarship can also be specific to a particular field, as proposed by UCL’s Critical Art History Scholarship, Research Opportunities funded at Kings College London for Learning Studies, Imperial College Roth Scholarship in Mathematics, William Harrison Doctoral Scholarship from the University of Leeds in Law.
- Furthermore, the Krebs Memorial Scholarship, the AMMP Section Scholarship, the Kamran Djam Scholarship and the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s and Doctoral Scholarship are not subject to geographical and/or content restrictions.
The academic world is never saturated with staff, so any desire to deepen the knowledge acquired in research is valuable and adds value to the entire society.
